A Scholar's Story: Angela

May 2026

Dear Anaya's Village,

Every scholar’s journey looks different — but no one gets there alone. Behind each first-generation college experience are moments of uncertainty, resilience, and the people who helped make the path clearer.

In this series, we’re continuing to share these stories in the voices of our scholars themselves. Not as highlights, but as honest reflections on growth, support, and what it means to move forward with guidance along the way.

This time, we’re sharing Angela’s story.

Sincerely,

Monica Kachru, Founder,  Anaya Scholars

“From my background, where I am now is unheard of.”

When Angela was only one year old, an accident left her with severe third-degree burns.

Surgeries, treatments, and long recoveries. Through it all, she witnessed a community of medical professionals who helped her heal.  She knew early that she wanted to become a doctor.

Angela understood early on that education was her path forward.

Surgeries forced her to fall behind, but she didn’t give up—staying back a year and earning the grades she needed to secure scholarships.

Navigating the path to college as a first-generation student came with many challenges. There was no roadmap at home—no guidance on applications, financial aid, or choosing the right school.

The support of the Anaya Scholars solidified her trajectory. Through Anaya, Angela was paired with a mentor, who became a steady source of guidance, encouragement, and understanding.

For the first time, Angela had someone who understood the hidden challenges and unwritten rules of college life that so many first-generation students must learn on their own.

Surrounded by peers from college preparatory schools and far greater resources, she quickly realized she was starting from a different place. She struggled at first, all while quietly facing the mounting pressure of supporting her family.

Every weekend, she returned home. Her first two years felt like a constant battle—academically, emotionally, and financially.

With the encouragement of her mentor, Angela began to give herself grace.

She became Co-Director of PEN ESL, leading a program that provides free online English classes to young learners. She gained research experience at Dana-Farber.

Opportunities she credits directly to the support and connections she received through Anaya Scholars.

Angela is in her final semester at Boston University, and she has been offered a full-time position at the clinic where she works, while preparing for medical school.

She knows the system isn’t always fair but she also knows that she is more than a transcript. She is the product of sacrifice, resilience, and relentless determination.

“From my background, where I am now is unheard of,” she reflects.

"Thank you so much for investing in my future, investing in me.  In a few more years, you’ll get your return with my greatest gratitude to you and Anaya Scholars.”

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not.

We exist to close that gap.
