In The Flipside of Microaggressions: How Micro-Recognitions Change Everything in Mentoring by Jean Rhodes, the article explores the powerful role mentors play in shaping scholars’ sense of belonging and confidence. While much attention is given to avoiding microaggressions, Rhodes introduces “micro-recognitions”—small, intentional moments where mentors affirm a scholar’s effort, potential, and value. These seemingly simple actions can have a lasting impact on how scholars see themselves and their ability to succeed.

The article also highlights the importance of balancing encouragement with honest, constructive feedback. When mentors communicate both high expectations and genuine belief in a scholar’s abilities, they build trust and create space for growth. Consistent recognition, clear communication, and active listening are key to fostering strong, supportive mentoring relationships.
